N.C. CU Launches Teen Contest

Latino Community Credit Union has got teens talking about their financial plans again with the launch of "What's Your Savings Story?"

The second annual contest, which runs through April 29, is part of the Durham, N.C.-based credit union's efforts to get area youth ages 10-18 to start saving and developing healthy financial practices.

To enter, young people visit www.latinoccu.org/contest and read about the struggles contest characters "Isabel" and "David" face as they try to make sound financial decisions. Throughout the stories the teens are encouraged to reflect on the characters' choices, then share a personal savings story discussing their goals and how they plan to reach them.

The winners in each age category (10-12, 13-15, 16-18) will receive $1,000 (first place), $500 (second place), and $250 (third place) in the form of a 24-month certificate of deposit as an incentive to start saving money for their future. The award money is made available through a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

The collection of stories will be used in the community, displayed in the credit union's branches, and published on the LCCU website to help encourage the culture of savings.
