CUNA and NAFCU PACs Rev Up for the 2010 Election Season
As the fall campaign season kicks into high gear, CUNA's political action committee has $1 million in its coffers for upcoming political activities.
The Credit Union Legislative Action Council of CUNA raised $123,950 during July, according to the most recent report filed with the Federal Election Commission, and contributed $203,449 to federal candidates and committees. Over the 2009-2010 election cycle, it has raised $2.1 million and contributed $2.2 million.
In July, CULAC gave $2,000 to the reelection campaign of Sander Levin (D-Mich.), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, and $5,000 to his leadership political action committee. In addition, it gave $5,000 to the leadership PAC of House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), who would become House speaker if the GOP wins a majority in that chamber.
CULAC also spent $13,250 on polling activities and gave $50,000 to the Arizona Credit Union League for member communications on behalf of former state Sen. Jim Waring, who lost the GOP nomination for U.S. House.
NAFCU-PAC raised $6,725 during July and contributed $60,085 to federal candidates and committees. During the 2009-2010 cycle, it has raised $284,380 and contributed $217,619 to federal candidates and committees.
In July, NAFCU-PAC gave Levin's campaign $1,000 and also gave $1,000 each to Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin, both Democrats who are seeking open U.S. Senate seats. It also gave $1,000 to Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), chairman of the House Rules Committee, which sets the terms for House debates and decides which amendments can be offered.
Because of Florida Gov. Charlie Crist's decision to leave the GOP and run for Senate an independent, CULAC and NAFCU-PAC have supported more than one Senate candidate in the Sunshine State.
Both PACs gave Crist and Democratic candidate Rep. Kendrick Meek of Florida $5,000 each. Former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio is the GOP nominee.
Both PACs gave Crist and Meek money for their primary campaigns and will reevaluate for the fall. Both have supported CU issues.
The PACs of CUNA and NAFCU also both gave $5,000 to Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who lost to attorney and former magistrate Joe Miller.
Former CUNA President/CEO Dan Mica has given $6,963 to CULAC. John Magill, senior vice president and top lobbyist of CUNA, has given $6,752 to CULAC and $4,800 to the campaign of Rep. Wally Herger (R-Calif.), his former boss.
Dan Berger, executive vice president and top lobbyist of NAFCU, contributed $500 to his association's PAC.
State Employees' Credit Union President/CEO Jim Blaine contributed to the campaign of his friend Rep. Brad Miller (D-N.C.), a member of the House Financial Services Committee.
