Ohio Elder Abuse Team Gets CU Input

The neglect and exploitation of the elderly has led to the formation of a Montgomery County, Ohio team, including a representative from Day Air Credit Union, to stop the abuse.

The Collaboration Against Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation is a 35-member multi-disciplinary team to tackle problems through education, advocacy, intervention and services. Bettina Buscemi, business development manager at the $210 million Day Air Credit Union in Kettering, Ohio, is on the team. She is also serving on an education sub-committee working with financial exploitation.

"This issue affects so many elderly people and many are unaware that it happens so often right in our community," said Buscemi, a certified credit union financial counselor, who serves on the advisory board of the City of Kettering Charles I. Lathrem Senior Center.

The Montgomery County Commissioners have designated June 15 as "Elder Abuse Awareness Day." In 2009, there were 1,400 reports of elder abuse here, including 407 suspected reports of self neglect, according to county officials.
