Debit Payments Near 960 Mil.

The ACCEL/Exchange debit payments network recorded nearly 960 million transactions in 2009, a nearly 40% increase over 2008 and a new yearly record, Fiserv Inc. said.

Those year-end figures included a new monthly record of more than 97 million transactions in December, a 36% increase over December 2008, the company said.

Fiserv said its point-of-sale channel saw a 37% increase in transactions in 2009, reaching more than 891 million, while ATM transactions increased 19% to 68 million over the previous year.

The company said it also added nearly 300 financial institutions to the ACCEL/Exchange network, bringing the total member count to nearly 2,600, while POS locations reached 1.3 million. There also are now 265,000 ATM network locations in the U.S. and nearly 2,400 in Canada the company said.

In February, the company added Convenience Payments, which allows consumers to initiate PIN-less transactions for eligible, low-risk, small transactions at qualified merchants.
