SYDNEY, Australia -- Criminals in Australia have struck upon a novel method of robbing ATMs: blow them up.
Most of the attempts to use explosives on ATMs have failed to yield, according to news accounts, but enough have succeeded to keep the new attack method continuing. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that only one out of a series of four recent explosive attacks on ATMs succeeded.
According to press accounts, thieves favor using gas, which they pump into the machines and then ignite.
The thieves turned to blowing up machines after police cracked down on the incidence of "smash and grab" ATM attacks. In those attacks, vehicles were used to smash into places with ATMs and carry away the entire machine.
