SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Literally taking a page of Greek mythology, the Education Credit Union has changed its name to Athena Credit Union.
The move is designed to break consumers' perceived barriers in joining the credit union. The new name pays tribute not only to the $12 million credit union's education roots but also is considered more inclusive.
The Greek goddess of wisdom and education, Athena symbolizes a strong guide who provides good advice and clever council.
Created in 1941, the credit union was originally established for employees of the Springfield City school system, but since amending its charter in 2005 membership now includes anyone who lives, works or worships in Clark County.
According to Athena CU CEO Kathy Allen, the greatest challenge has been "to create a credit union name that will remain true to our education roots."
"The new name more aptly reflects our desire to provide not only traditional banking services but embodies our basic philosophy--to offer education, strength and sound financial guidance for our members," said Allen.
The idea is further reinforced in the new logo which features the four pillars of education, which are learning to know, do, be and live together.
In addition, radio spots focus on helping consumers with Allen offering money-saving tips.
"These aren't just banking or savings tips, but tips on how to save money in everyday life, so people can improve their overall financial situation," said Allen. "The new name is a recommitment to our members--to provide knowledge, guidance, and the right tools--in choosing the best course of action as they deal with their financial situations."
