Hero Account Nets $22,000

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. -- The Hero Account of First Citizens' Federal Credit Union is proving an ideal vehicle this year in demonstrating support to the military.

Drawing praise from local veterans groups for focusing public limelight on their own fundraising, the Hero Account lets members select favorites from a list of designated organizations to receive earmarked donations.

Under the program, the $425 million First Citizens' donates $50 to the designated organization as picked by the member who opens an account offering rate cuts and reduced loan and checking fees plus other benefits.

Less than five months after the account's debut, First Citizens' Federal Credit Union has contributed more than $22,000 to such organizations as the Middleborough Veterans Outreach Center and the Falmouth Military Support Group.

One prominent recipient is Homes for Our Troops, the Taunton, Mass.-based group currently hooked up with CUNA to erect two specially adapted homes for wounded Iraq and Afghanistan veterans during this summer's Democratic and Republican National Conventions.
