Credit Unions Obliged to Educate and Engage Employees in Advocacy Efforts, Cheney Says

PASADENA, Calif. -- Advocacy is the responsibility of every credit union employee, just as an organization's sales effort requires a total buy-in, said California Credit Union League President/CEO Bill Cheney at February 21 at the HRD Network's Annual Convention.

Cheney urged the HR pros in attendance to educate and involve employees in industry advocacy efforts, and promoted the League's Connect for the Cause (http://www.connectforthecause.com), an online network that alerts credit union supporters about legislative issues, and provides a quick and easy mechanism for sending emails of support or opposition to legislators.

"Our system produced 6,000 emails regarding last year's data breach bill, and it had a huge impact," Cheney said, adding the system continues to promote support of CURIA.

"And I don't think it's any coincidence that so many CURIA supporters are from California," he added.

Cheney said it's a credit union's responsibility to educate employees about legislative issues, because banking industry efforts to eliminate credit unions compromises their jobs. He said the league has representatives it sends to credit unions to speak to employees about legislative issues.
