SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Arrowhead Credit Union encountered some resistance during last week's city council approval of its new office building, but officials from the $1.1 billion institution say the project's a go.
Arrowhead has until August 2010 to construct a new operations center near a minor-league baseball stadium that bears the credit union's name, Arrowhead Credit Union Park. The city council approved the construction deadline during a Jan. 22 council meeting, but not after a local developer challenged it, saying the building will occupy land the city had planned to use for additional stadium parking.
City officials couldn't locate any previous records of the parking lot proposal to support claims of developer Warner Hodgdon. Besides, the city already sold the land to the 161,000-member Arrowhead, which rendered any previous plans irrelevant.
Steve Skaggs, Arrowhead vice president of corporate real estate, said that while the credit union has a close relationship with the city, minor problems often crop up when dealing with construction projects. The project will proceed as planned, he said.
Skaggs added that it is his understanding the ballpark has ample parking for both current and future fans.
