King Memorial Receives Funds from Service CU, First Community CU

WASHINGTON -- Service Credit Union has donated $30,000 toward the building of a national memorial in Washington that will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., while First Community Credit Union dressed down to raise $2,400 for the effort.

"Service Credit Union is proud to be among those honoring the life of Doctor King through the creation of this historic monument," said Gordon Simmons, president/CEO of $1 billion Service Credit Union. "Dr. King personified social responsibility and the ideals that we live by at credit unions. He continues to inspire us with his remarkable leadership."

A recent corporate dress down day at First Community Credit Union has raised nearly $1,200 towards the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial campaign. The $1 billion credit union said it matched the funds raised by its employees, bringing the total to nearly $2,400.

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation (www.mlkmemorial.org) is currently raising $100 million towards the building of the memorial and center on the National Mall in Washington that will feature King's life and accomplishments. To date, the foundation has raised more than $84 million. The memorial is scheduled to be completed in 2009.
