King Memorial Receives $5,000 from Illinois League

NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Count the Illinois Credit Union System among the latest in the movement to donate to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, which will recognize the civil rights advocate with a memorial in his honor on the National Mall in Washington.

The league said it has donated $5,000 to the memorial. The foundation (www.mlkmemorial.org) is currently raising $100 million toward the building of the memorial and an expansive center that will feature King's life and accomplishments. To date, the foundation has raised $84 million. The groundbreaking took place on Nov. 13, 2006 and the memorial is scheduled to be completed in 2009.

Collectively, the credit union industry has pledged $1 million toward the King memorial. The African-American Credit Union Coalition has spearheaded a campaign to encourage the movement to donate to the memorial.
