ST. LOUIS -- The list of industry notables that have donated to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project now includes Fiserv Inc., Schmitt Sussman Enterprise (PFP) and Financial Services COOP Inc.
Fiserv has donated $10,000, SSE has contributed $5,000 and Financial Services COOP has donated $2,500 to the memorial, according to Hubert Hoosman, funding chair and treasurer for the African-American Credit Union Coalition, which has been encouraging the credit union industry to raise $2 million towards the memorial's $100 million goal.
According to the latest figures from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, the memorial, scheduled to be complete in 2009, is nearly $20 million away from its goal. The foundation held its "Dream Concert" on Sept. 18 at Radio City Music Hall that featured a number of musicians, singers and other celebrities to help raise funds.
Meanwhile as of Sept. 21, $1,003,717.42 has been pledged and $874,842.82 has actually been donated from within the credit union industry, according to Hoosman.
The King memorial will be the first on the National Mall in Washington to honor an African-American.
