Affinity FCU Sponsors Internet Safety Event

BASKING RIDGE, N.J. -- Affinity Federal Credit Union is working to help children and teens be safe online.

The credit union is teaming up with the Hillsborough Township chapter of D.A.R.E. on September 29 to talk up the importance of Internet safety.

Featuring Internet security experts, the free event will share tips for staying safe while still allowing children to use this important tool. The event, which will last approximately one hour, will take place at Affinity's Hillsborough Branch.

According to the Pew Internet and American Life Project, 93% of tweens and teens between the ages of 12 and 17 go online for everything from social networks to homework research.

What's troubling is what else they're doing online. Market research firm eMarketer found that 75% of children are willing to share personal information online about themselves and their family in exchange for goods and services. One in five teens encountered a sexual solicitation while online and only 25% of children who encountered a sexual solicitation or approach told a parent.
