VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Chartway Federal Credit Union has been named one of the 25 "Best Places to Work" in Hampton Roads by weekly business journal Inside Business. The magazine selected the credit union for its tuition assistance program and loan discounts. Other employee perks mentioned include a '50s themed lunchroom and being flown into the credit union's Virginia Beach headquarters for an annual employee appreciation night and costume party. In addition, Inside Business recognized Chartway's community service efforts. Staffers donated more than 800 hours of service in 2005, including flying in volunteers for Houston hurricane relief and the credit union's annual golf tournament that raised $300,000, bringing its total to $875,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern Virginia since 1999. "The credit union philosophy of 'people helping people' starts with our own employees," said Chartway President/CEO Ronald L. Burniske. "We've always felt that they are our No. 1 asset. The bottom line is--a satisfied employee means satisfied members. This award is a testament to our focus on what is truly the foundation of our success--our employees." Chartway has 39 branches in eight states.
