BEL AIR, Md. - With the installation of a state-of-the-art electronic scoreboard, Edgewood High School sport fans have a lot to cheer about. According to school execs the scoreboard, which features the Freedom Federal Credit Union logo, is the most advanced of its kind in any high school in the state. The credit union joined other community sponsors and the school's Athletic Booster Club to make the dream a reality for the high school. The new scoreboard package, including two large state-of-the-art scoreboards, shot clocks, along with a new portable scorer's table were unveiled and dedicated at the Ram's varsity basketball game with C. Milton Wright. With the 30-year old single scoreboard dying a slow death as replacement parts became harder and harder to find, the Athletic Boosters decided to make funding a new scoreboard their number one priority. The new 6' high by 10' wide scoreboards not only have the usual features that keep track of points scored, minutes and seconds to play, fouls committed and bonus situations, but side 3' wide by 6' high statistic boards provide information on each player - both home and visitors. An interactive 2' high by 10' wide "message board" with hundreds of pre-programmable animated graphics has been installed above the scoreboard to build interest among spectators. The message center is controlled by a laptop computer, which an operator can use to call up the appropriate graphic to match the game action. EHS Principal Joe Schmidt said "the scoreboard will be a point of pride to the school community." At a dedication ceremony, representatives from each of the businesses and organizations who contributed to the project were present to receive plaques and commendations from Principal Schmitz, and school officials. Among the honoree were Rose Ann Lambert and Liz Leoni of Freedom FCU; Stathis Kotanidis and Peter Anastasi of Pat's Pizzeria; Jim Burgess of ISmart; John Gonzales of JC Discount Tires, Diane and Bill Harloe of Burger King of Harford County, Helen Morrison and Diane Rose of the Edgewood High School Alumni Association; Gary Stempler of R. Stempler Nissan; Duan Sigafoos of Sigafoos Chiropractic; Anthony's Barber Shop; and Howard McComas IV of the McComas Funeral Home.
