Sir, CUNA is "Not out of Bounds"

I disagree with the viewpoint of Wally Murray in his letter to the editor in the July 20, 2005 issue. I do think that CUNA and our leagues need to prepare and adopt a conversion policy for credit unions converting to another type of financial institution. The policy statement is a general guideline for the credit union system to follow and in no way meddles in the private business of individual credit unions. I think Mr. Murray's comparison of "...a scenario where a credit union board issues a decree to its members..." is an inappropriate example. The policy statement on conversions is great in that it establishes some goals for our associations to follow in order to tighten up some of the weak areas related to the conversion process. I think this is the job of CUNA and the league board of directors that have been elected by its member credit unions. As an elected official of CUNA or a league board of directors one has a fiduciary responsibility to establish policy on such important matters rather than remaining silent.
