USAA FCU Changes Name, Headquarters
SAN ANTONIO - With its new community charter, USAA FCU decided it was time to make a name change. The CU, after 50 years of exclusively serving USAA (United Services Automobile Association) employees and their family members, was granted a community charter by NCUA to serve people who live, work, worship or attend school in Bexar County. To reflect the expanded field of membership, the credit union changed its name to United San Antonio Community FCU and plans at times to just go by United SA Federal Credit Union in its marketing materials. One of the reasons for the charter change was access problems caused by tight security. Since September 11, USAA has tightened access to their building. All visitors must be placed on an official visitor list prior to their arrival. They must present photo ID to security for access to the campus and again when they have arrived in the visitor lobby on campus. As a result, the CU said it is very inconvenient for members who do not work for USAA to use their credit union. The $235 million credit union is also relocating to a new nearby three-story, 40,000 square-foot headquarters in late June.
