$10 Note Next Up for Re-design

WASHINGTON - The $10 denomination is the next note scheduled for a make-over by the Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The newly designed $10 note is scheduled to be issued by the Federal Reserve in early 2006. It will feature similar enhanced security features, subtle background colors and symbols of American freedom as the new $20 and $50 notes. The $100 note will also eventually be redesigned, but a timetable for its introduction hasn't been set yet. At the current time, the federal government is not planning to redesign the $1, $2 and $5 notes. In preparation for the release of the redesigned $10 note, the BEP has already begun working with cash-handling equipment manufacturers to prepare them and allow sufficient time for the makers of vending machines, ATMs and other machines that receive and dispense cash, to make technical adjustments to their equipment before the redesigned note goes into circulation. The BEP intends to provide manufacturers with test notes and specifications about six months in advance of the note's release.
