GREENSBORO, N.C. - Utah's credit union nemesis, Harris H. Simmons, apparently is revving up for his fall ascendancy into the top elected job at the American Bankers Association with a speech here March 22 to a meeting of the North Carolina Bankers Association. The title of the talk by the Zions Bancorporation CEO was "The Credit Union Challenge" made before the annual Bank Directors Assembly sponsored by NCBA. Just what Simmons, ABA chairman-elect who takes over the top job in September, told the group was not immediately known but an NCBA spokesman said the Salt Lake executive did have handout summaries. Alerting its members in its weekly "Network" e-mail, the North Carolina Credit Union League warned that Simmons, was bringing "his anti-credit union message to the Tar Heel state." The ABA in Washington said visits by Simmons and others in the trade group leadership to state association meetings were nothing out of the ordinary this time of year. Also making such trips are Elizabeth A. Duke, ABA chairman and executive vice president of Wachovia Bank in Virginia Beach, Va., and Earl McVicker, ABA vice chairman and CEO of Central Bank & Trust Co. of Hutchinson, Kan.
