MasterCard Credit and Debit Both Show Double Digit First Quarter Growth
PURCHASE, N.Y. - Both MasterCard's credit and so-called offline debit transactions in which a cardholder validates their transactions with their signature showed double digit growth in the U.S. in the first three months of 2004. MasterCard credit card purchase volume over the first three months of 2004 rose 12.5% over the first three months of 2003, to $121 million. Offline debit volume rose 15.0% over the same period in 2003 to $21.2 million. "The year is getting off to a strong start for both MasterCard and our customers," said Robert W. Selander, MasterCard President and CEO. "We have seen an increase in worldwide purchase growth in every region, reflecting the improving global economy. Compared to the same period in 2003, all regions of MasterCard experienced double-digit growth in purchases, including Asia/Pacific, which is turning around after a challenging year in 2003."
