Wisconsin Credit Union Legislation Signed into Law

MADISON, Wis. - Gov. Jim Doyle signed the state's recently passed financial modernization bill, which includes several credit union provisions, in to law. Among the provisions of the new law, it allows CUs to serve multiple regions and counties, makes it easier for them to open branch offices, and allows CUs to receive `low-income' designation from state and federal regulators, thus permitting them to serve members and non-members in areas when consumers can benefit from lower-cost services such as check cashing. The measure was passed by the state Senate on Sept. 30, and an amended version passed the Assembly on Oct. 1.
