MADISON, Wis.-The National Endowment for Financial Education's financial education program aimed at teenagers reported record numbers of students participating, according to CUNA. More than 76,000 students at almost 900 high schools took part in NEFE's High School Financial Planning Program during the 2002-03 school year, sponsored by CUNA. That includes nearly 1,000 more students and 100 more schools than the previous school year. Though record setting, the numbers were not as high as anticipated. "Last year's reports suggest that credit union participation in the HSFPP has hit a plateau of about 75,000 students," CUNA Director of Youth Programs Philip Heckman said. "However, these numbers are based on orders for student guides, which NEFE receives mostly from teachers." He said he suspects that teachers' underreporting of credit union involvement is significant and "shouldn't discourage us." Specifically, the joint credit union and U.S. Department of Agriculture's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service projects account for 60 schools and 3,505 students. CUNA remains confident it will achieve its goal of 1,000 schools and 100,000 students in the 2003-04 school year, Heckman said.
