Many Credit Union Officials Shy Away from Commenting on Share Insurance Disclosures

WASHINGTON-Credit Union Times posed a seemingly simple question to several credit union leaders: should members at federally insured credit unions be notified when their accounts are in excess of the federal government's $100,000 deposit insurance coverage? The response rate was less than stellar. Of seven organizations or individuals invited to comment on the issue, just two responded. CUNA and NAFCU have worked out an agreement between themselves to tone down the private insurance debate and, thus, both declined to respond as they saw the question as too closely related. NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar and Vice Chair JoAnn Johnson also turned down the offer since a related issue is currently before the board. Additionally, American Share Insurance President and CEO Dennis Adams declined to comment. In the end, two brave souls dared to address the subject. Here are their responses.
