In reinforcement of Mike Welch's opinion ("Lofty Renaissance Goals Are Fading Fast", CU Times, Oct. 31), I would ask, "What lofty goals"? It is precisely because the Renaissance Commission's efforts were short on lofty goals while long on current problems that the impact of their effort is fading. Sustained effort requires great ends, the fewer the better. Instead of a JFK type challenge (i.e., "To put a man on the moon and return him safely to earth."), they produced mainly known objectives (i.e., Mission, FOM, Insurance Fund, etc.) and a laundry list of current problems (i.e., Tax Exemption, Capital, Regulatory Environment). Given this, it's probably best that the effort "fade to black". However, this would leave us with an untenable void. I strongly believe we do need a collectively shared, motivating vision as we move into the 21st century, one that is worthy of a sustained effort because the outcome for our members, both present and potential, and our country is uncertain yet crucial.
