Fire Police City County FCU fundraiser helps " Race against Cancer"
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Many of today's race car drivers are fueled by a passion for money and success. But Fire Police City County Federal Credit Union Member Service Representative Chris O'Connell is not your everyday driver - he's in it to raise awareness in the fight against cancer. "My reason for doing this is solely to raise awareness for the American Cancer Society in our fight against cancer," said O'Connell. "I just hope that in the future, families won't experience the pain and difficulty that my family went through." O'Connell's grandfather died of lung cancer. He isn't alone. Many of Fire Police City County FCU members' families have been impacted by cancer. The credit union recently held a fundraiser at their office to add its support in raising money for research and development of more effective treatments and possible cures. "Chris is just such a wonderful guy," said FPCC FCU Marketing Director Phyllis Brockmeyer. "Both the little kids and the `big kids' enjoy seeing his race car." O'Connell is a driver in the Automobile Racing Club of America Midget Series and had his car adorned with the "Racing Against Cancer" and American Cancer Society logos. The ARCA Midget Series will take "Racing Against Cancer" across four states: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Illinois. O'Connell brought his midget racer to the credit union during the fundraiser, where some members gave in honor of Commissioner Jack McComb who recently died from lymphoma. The American Cancer Society was also present at the credit union and had educational information available on prevention and testing and gave premiums with donations. According to the American Cancer Society, if all Americans participated in regular cancer screenings, the five year relative survival rate for some types of cancer would increase from 80% to 95%. At this time, knowledge, prevention and regular checkups are the primary defense against the disease. All funds raised went to the American Cancer Society. FPCCFCU has $32.9 million in assets and serves 6,867 members. -firstname.lastname@example.org
