SAN DIEGO - Navy Federal Credit Union is making the six month deployment at sea a little bit easier for families by sponsoring its "Ship to Shore" Book Drive benefiting the Family Literacy Foundation's UNITED THROUGH READINGSM program. "This is one more way for Navy Federal and its members to help ease the difficulties of deployment," said Navy Federal CU Regional Marketing Manger Les Rye. "If the effort brings a smile to the faces of just one Navy family, the book drive can be considered a success." Established to keep parents and children connected, UNITING THROUGH READINGSM is a quality of life program in which deployed personnel communicate with children through reading stories aloud on videotape. Studies have shown that reading aloud with young children in their first five years can have positive educational and emotional benefits. The book drive campaign included posters, newspaper advertisements, teller buttons and internet announcements under "What's New". To date over 3,600 children and adults have benefited from this program. New and slightly used books for children up to age 12, collected by Navy Federal CU will be donated to the seven ships in the Stennis Battlegroup who participate in the program. Navy Federal CU has $11 billion in assets and serves over 1.9 million members. -mbourjolly@cutimes.com
