Mills' miscellany

*In addition to electing Jim Mills to the NAFCU board chair, the association's June 17 election also elevated:

* Diane Furnas, president of Southwest

Airline FCU, to the board vice chair;

* Bill Brooks, president of Lafayette FCU, to

board treasurer; and

* A.C. Cowans, president of McCoy FCU, to

board executive committee secretary; * Mills was hired for NCUA (under its old Bureau of Federal Credit Unions name) by an agency recruiter whose aunt taught Mills when a youngster. He took a financial loss in retirement money when his 1985 departure from NCUA was a year-and-a-half short of the 20-year retirement point; *Mills, who is a golf enthusiast, has a BA in Economics and Accounting from Kentucky Wesleyan College (Owensboro, Kentucky). He claims, however, also to have an "MBWA"-masters degree by "walking around." His reading habits for the moment are confined to technical journals and material about the credit union industry. He has a son 24-years old, a daughter 28, and a granddaughter who is the "apple of his eye." *The three rivers represented in Three Rivers FCU's name are Fort Wayne's St. Joe, St. Mary, and Maumee rivers; *Fort Wayne FCU's CDCU charter encompasses 110,000 people and 48,000 households in the "old town" area of original Fort Wayne. It took the FCU almost 17 months (under IRPS 94-1) to get the CDCU charter amendment; *NCUA approved 72 CDCU expansions in 1999 for a potential membership addition of 1.6 million low-income people; * Mills signature quote: "Our philosophy here at our credit union is that, `Look, if XYZ credit union across the street has a better product and can do a better job for you than we can, then that's where you ought to be.'" -
