LOVELAND, Colo. - Two raging forest fires fanned by gusty winds and which at press time had already torched nearly 50 mountain homes in the eastern front of the Colorado Rockies forced the evacuation the afternoon of June 13 of the area west of this city, home to Sunrise Credit Union. According to sources, Sondra Koberstein, president of Longs Peak Credit Union here and Sunrise CU Manager Diana deWinton kept in touch throughout the day comparing notes on the increasing smoke and deteriorating conditions caused by the fire which had been burning since Sunday, June 11. On June 14 the fires were still reported to be burning out of control. When Koberstein heard the radio report of the evacuation at about 4:30 p.m., she called deWinton and encouraged her to bring whatever she needed to set up shop at Longs Peak CU. DeWinton secured all the credit union's documents at Long Peak CU, placed a message on the Sunrise CU e-mail network and provided recorded information on the telephone answering system so members knew where they could go to transact their credit union business. Sunrise Credit Union has $2 million in assets, 193 members and two employees. Its facility is located at the Sunrise Ranch, which is being used to provide meals to firefighters in the area. -ekingoff@cutimes.com
