CUNA is first CU group to join financial education coalition

WASHINGTON - CUNA has joined the National Partners for Financial Empowerment coalition being spearheaded by the Treasury Department.

Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers described the coalition as a vehicle to "bring greater focus and visibility to the hundreds of financial literacy projects already under way in America."

CUNA President Dan Mica said the association's membership in the coalition underscores its commitment to promote financial literary in the U.S.

In February CUNA joined with the National Endowment for Financial Education to sponsor the High School Financial Planning Program, a financial education program for high school students.

At press time CUNA was the only credit union organization to join the coalition. Other participants include NEFE, the Consumer Bankers Association, FDIC, FTC, SEC, American Savings Education Council, and others. While many federal banking regulators joined the coalition, NCUA has not.
